AW: My questionnaire results

We conducted our surveys through facebook messages with our friends, this allowed us to target who we talked to and who would be most useful, aswell as giving us more qualitative responses. It was essentially like a mini online focus group. Aswell as this, this method was better than surveymonkey.com which we used last year as we can now look at peoples responses and see how they responded to other questions. For example Vince, who is into indie music, didnt really like the track. If this was survey monkey, all we'd know is that one person didnt like the track and one person likes indie music.

What genre of music most appeals to you?
Lawrence Evans
Rap/Hip-hop
Felix Page
Rap/Hip-hop
Vince Firth
Indie(Rock)
Keir Burbidge
Rap/Hip-hop
Nat McKerlie
Rap/Indie

Do you play close attention to the details of music videos?
Lawrence Evans
Not really unless I've been told specifically to watch the video
Felix Page
I'll try, if the concept is interesting I will
Vince Firth
Depends on how much I like the artist
Keir Burbidge
When its someone saying the words I will but i dont like following a complex storyline as it takes the focus away from the music, especially in rap
Nat McKerlie
Depends on the song, if I like the song then i will, if not i like to just have it on in the background

Do you enjoy a music video more when it includes the artist singing or when there is a storyline separate to the music?
Lawrence Evans
For rap music, probably someone singing along, unless the lyrics tell a story which can be played out
Felix Page
I prefer to have a little film to watch but if its too different to the song then its wierd
Vince Firth
Its all about the type of music, if its like heavy rock then you'd want a video of them like on stage but for rap id say either a story with the words or just someone rapping with cool things happening aswell.
Keir Burbidge
'I pretty much just answered that'

(When its someone saying the words I will but i dont like following a complex storyline as it takes the focus away from the music, especially in rap)
Nat McKerlie
I like a story line especially when it follows the song

(After listening to Mikill Pane's Remix of Gotye's somebody I used to know) what are your general feelings about the track after you've listened?
Lawrence Evans
I'm quite a big fan of Mikill Pane and hadn't heard this track, but his wordplay and stuff definetly makes the track a lot more upbeat and less pop-ey

Felix Page
Its quite a sad song, its all about them breaking up, also it goes on for ages after the rappings stopped with just music and it gets quite boring without the rap
Vince Firth
Not really my cup of tea if im honest but my feelings about the track are quite good its nice word play, thats my favourite bit, i like it more than the original.
Keir Burbidge
You'd need to make it less based on gotyes song if your doing a video for it, try and keep the focus on the rapping or it'll just look like a cheesy pop video
Nat McKerlie
Its quite summery, the beat makes it quite happy I think even though hes talking about breaking up so I dont really know how I feel its a cool mix of both I think.

Group: Final concept development

Below is the songs lyrics, along with the individual shots that are going to be shown alongside each line of dialogue.

At the start of the video there is about 18 seconds of intro, during this time we will display the titles on a plain black background with a bold white font for around 5 seconds. After this we will have our artist walking into the first location (plain white or black room) as if there is no camera and he is setting up and getting ready to start performing.
I tried to get you to communicate instead of walking out on everything
I said let's have it out, let's go wild
Two months ago we were talking bout a wedding now we're walking past each other in a Tesco aisle
(this shot is going to be a CU or MS of the artist performing the lines in the first location (plain room with one solid colour 0:19-0:26)

I'm as bitter as the Boddingtons I drown my sorrows in
(The artist will be holding a can of boddingtons as an MS in the next location, in a fairly plain bedroom with choice items in the background - nike shoes, supreme poster)

I heard about that Gotye sound and borrowed it
Since you went and left all my sympathetic friends said,
"Don't worry, she's gonna come around tomorrow, kid"
They mean well but I don't believe that babe
Tomorrow never comes, I never see that day
(These lines are all going to be performed in the council estate location with pan around artist.)

You're the exit sign I hunt for above the front door
(This line will be performed infront of a plain white wall which has an exit sign, possibly a wall in our school, and as the artist says the line he will subtly look at the exit sign the camera will pan so that the sign becomes visible in the shot.)

Because you really didn't have to leave that way
But that wasn't enough
(These two lines will be performed in the same location as before as a CU)

You grabbed all of your stuff
(This line will be performed at the bedroom location, he may or may not be lip syncing, and he will be holding a bin bag full of 'stuff')

I just sat alone in the flat, calling your bluff
Then I tried to call you after a couple of days
(this will be shot at the bedroom location, low angle sitting on bed maybe)

Your position was the same but your number was changed
(same as above but artist holds up an old style phone.)

But you didn't have to cut me off (Tearing up a photo)

Make it like it never happened and that we were nothing (Vignette ,hazy, dream like shot of couple)

And I don't even need your love

But you treat me like a stranger and that feels so rough (Woman shouting at man, arguing)

No you didn't have to stoop so low

Have your friends collect your records and then change your number (Woman walking away)

I guess that I don't need that though

Now you're just somebody that I used to know (shot in dark with flashlight on)

Now you're just somebody that I used to know (Burning of a picture)

Now you're just somebody that I used to know

I used to have a place in your heart now you probably don't even see my face in your head
(shot as MS at plain white location artist touches his heart during line)

I may as well go to sleep in sky, because I see too much space in the bed
(Shot in bedroom location, birds eye of artist laying in bed performing)

I wanna break off the dial every tune
Because every song on the radio reminds me of you
(the artist sits up from the previous shot and hols up an old school radio shot as MS at eyeline level)
But I can't make a record selection since your friend came to collect your collection
(shot at a CD shop, artist flicking through CDs, swish pan transition to next shot)

If I ever told I could let you go please believe I only said it in the heat of the moment
Amy Winehouse said loves a losing game she was right because I don't even see my opponent
What hurts most is that you vanished by choice, now I feel lower than Barry White's voice
(shot at rural location handheld track of artist, holds up bottle of vanish during final line.)

Now I'm in the lobby of a studio writing a song about somebody that I used to know

But you didn't have to cut me off (Loads of photos torn up on the ground)

Make it like it never happened and that we were nothing

And I don't even need your love (Vignette ,hazy, dream like shot of couple becoming seperated)

But you treat me like a stranger and that feels so rough

No you didn't have to stoop so low (bottle smashing on wall, slow motion/reverse?)

Have your friends collect your records and then change your number

I guess that I don't need that though

Now you're just somebody that I used to know (shot behind plain board)

Now you're just somebody that I used to know

Now you're just somebody that I used to know (roaring flames)

Group : Location Reccies

0-0.05 = This car will be present in one of the performance shots, it is vintage and very stylish nowadays

0.06-0.22 = This is a time compression shot, we are unsure whether we will use a shot like this in our final piece we just wanted to see how the standard cameras handled when we changed the speed. This is where our first reccie is in South borough council estate

0.23-0.35 = We have used group members as stand-in performers for these test shots but here is a track into 360 pan we wish to recreate in our final piece.

0.36-0.42 = Here is a tilt pan of what will be our performer, highlighting specifically his trainers and outfit which is a large part of us replicating our artists image

0.43-0.49 = There is no performer stand in here, but we want to get a low angle shot of our performer sitting on the wall looking down at the camera

0.49-0.55 = This is our second location which is a derelict building next to some garages in Southborough

0.55-1.03 = We want to do a low angle shot of our performer with some barbed wire in the Mise-en-scene

1.03-1.07 = We plan on having our performer continue rapping as he hops off of this wall

1.07-1.16 = We might have to refine this shot to make it smoother but we want to recreate a pan across something and ending at our performer

1.16-1.26 = Here are the garages where we will shoot a number of our performance shots like this. Next is our final location of the drama studio

1.26-1.32 = This is the shot we mentioned earlier we might use as a filler shot, but we have to move around the angle of the light to find the best shot possible

1.32-1.37 = Here is the drama studio in the light, we will probably use the blacked out wall at the back to shoot our performance shots infront of.

Group : Progress update

We now have an extra day for our pitch which has been moved to Thursday 10th October.

Today we have carried our a location reccie for some of the places we are going to film in our production in order to put into our pitch, as well as a number of shots that we will also integrate within our production. All we need to do know it give our our questionnaire for audience research which we will post via Facebook later tonight, as well as the feedback for it. Also we need to add in a slide to our pitch about technical analysis.

We have decided on a couple of shots to use for our production, which we have added into our shot by shot list of the lyrics. These consist of a shot in the dark using a flashlight and  a number of shots using a board.

Group : Progress update

Today we have mapped out our ideas for production in terms of what we are going to do for the lyrics. We have written out in detail, highlighting what will happen during which point of the lyrics so that we know exactly what we need to film during our production. We have continued with the pitch, deciding that we are going to carry out a survey over Facebook as opposed to a focus group. Also in terms of the pitch, we have created several aspects such as the location ideas, methodology, costume ideas and part of; the treatment, difficulties  etc...

Therefore next we will actually need to devise the survey for our Facebook research so that we can carry our our primary audience research as soon as possible. Also we need to finish aspects of the pitch such as: print/digipak ideas, audience research, difficulties, treatment etc... so that we are ready to present for 1 week today.

We have decided with our production that instead of using an illustrative approach for the lyrics, we are going to go for amplification, as well as performance. Therefore we will no longer be using narrative within our production

This is a story board of some of the shot ideas we have

Group : Progress update

We have drawn up a list of decisions of which we need to make over the next couple of weeks. Our pitch is going to be carried out next week (wednesday 9th october) so therefore this week we are carrying out the preperation for our pitch.

Also we need to decide what our production will actually consist of in terms of what is going to happen at each stage within the lyrics.

This is the list of decisions we need to make in the coming weeks
