AH : Genre and Narrative

Rizzle kicks- Down with the trumpets

First of all, it is evident from this music video that there is a narrative for the audience to follow. This features the artists, as opposed to other productions such as Rudimental, not giving in, where the artist is not present, and therefore passive. This therefore allows the artists to give a personal mode of adress, which is evident through the use of camera shots and close ups where they look directly at the camera, as a result 'breaking the fourth wall.'

In terms of the links with the visuals it is an example of amplification which is evident because there is a link to the lyrics, however it takes a created approach as opposed to an literal and illustrative. Therefore, it does not conform to Barthes theory of having an active audience because the interpretation and narrative is a clear strucure, almost like a fabula, where a narrative in some type of chronological order exists.

This video can be considered an art in many ways, due to the fact that firstly it uses amplifiction, therefore it requires a lot in order to establish a creative link to the visuals. Furthermore, the use of camera shots show evidence of innovative shots which are not traditionally used in a lot of music videos, so therefore there is evidence of music being an art, due to the fact that this music video does differentiate itself from others through the use of narrative and camera shots. We can see this through profilmic techniques and post production techniques, for example the use of the shot where the artist falls into the wall in one location then pushes off it in another location.

In terms of this production being post modern, it does reflect the values in the sense that they beleive that no media texts are of any greater value than another. They believe all judgements are based merely on taste and therefore, despite this showing evidence of creative aspects this music video does follow some traditional elements, so it is a mixture of banal and traditional aspects in this sense, as the music video follows typical illustrative and amplified lyrics, however it also adds elements in terms of camera shots and editing techniques which may be considered unique in comparison to other productions content, so therefore there is some degree of originality within this production.

In terms of Barthes theory, down with the trumpets conforms to most of the 5 codes. For example, in terms of cultural codes, it is evident that through the use of content within the production that it expresses a much more youth culture. This can be enforced through the use of the artists costume for example as well as aspects which may conform to a lot of younger generations psychographics for example the use of street dance.
