AW: Genre and Narrative : A deconstruction of The Edge of a Cliff - The Streets
Using the theory of Andrew Goodwin (1992) we see that this video is clearly performance based, however does have a narrative, just not the one being sung in the lyrics. So therefore the video is disjunctive, as even though we have the performer singing the footage neither illustrates or amplifies the lyrics.
Mike Skinner also uses a first person mode of address when performing, talking straight to the camera without a band or stage behind him. This works well with his style of music which is more that of a spoken word poet than a rapper. This technique makes his song more personal giving him more of a connection with the audience, using present techniques to enhance his star image.
The video does not present any challenging ideas, however the concept of the video is very interesting as it is simply someone moving into a new flat, which is a very familiar feeling as Skinner attempts to continue his image as a normal person, making him relatable to his audience.
I would not say the video is artistic in any way however, other than the part where the books are moving as stop motion in the background, the rest of the video is very plain and simple in terms of artistic devices, camera techniques, mise-en-scene etc.
